LA/OC Chapter of MCA-i is pulling together a Producers-Performers Roundtable discussion. It's an open forum to discuss anythig relating to performers on one hand and production on the other. One of our Panelists is Anne Ganguzza,founder of the worlldwide VO Peeps and a member of MCA-i. The evening will be moderated by actor-director Brian Page and our producer panelist will be announced shortly. But it's really all about YOU. What do we have to discuss? How about fair rates, rehearsals, agents, unions, casting, OC opportunities, Ad agencies, hyohenates, divas, directors and slave-drivers, promoting yourself online and everywhere and more...but what is it YOU want to talk about? Expect an evening of interactive, honest discussion. Bring your friends as well as headshots and resumes. You never know who you'll meet.

MCA-i Creates Member Videos at OC Sound Stage

The October '14 chapter meeting was a real departure! Instead of an expert speaker sharing valuable info on the media industry we produced over half a dozen short videos for members—all thanks to Tom Smith (videogrpaher) and the OC Sound Stage (location.) Besides the talents of Tom Smith, other members contributed by helping each other prepare and deliver their on-camera 'elevator pitch.'  Those who took advantage of the unique offer were very pleased. For some it was the only way they were able to get such a marketing video for themselves—Free! Petr Hasa, the Stage Mgr of the OC Sound Stage, was not only generous with the facility but with his time as well! John Lister volunteered and was a big help. The main stage, Studio A, was busy wrapping up a production so we used their 'Studio B,' a good sized insert stage that was more than ample. The facility also boasts a green room, wardrobe-makeup room and a very nice kitchen-dining area. So there was plenty of room to spread out, rehearse privately if you desired or mingle with others and snack on the usual. While it was a small crowd, there was lots of networking and camaraderie! Thank YOU Tom Smith and OC Sound Stage--and all who participated!

The free video is an opportunity for members to utilize media to promote themselves and their business. MCA-I's Summer Project '14 was Massive & Fun

Our first-ever 'Summer Project' was the video and audio coverage of a unique 2 day community music festival, the "60's OC Musician's Reunion II." MCA-I recruited an all-volunteer crew who shot over both days and recorded all the emotions and music of the historical get-together. Thanks to the 20 media professionals who pitched in, close to 75 hours of video were captured to document the event which was held on three stages.

We have the remote possibility that this project may be aired on PBS as a special but at the very least there will be a DVD documentary made from it and you will get a copy with your name in the credits. May 21, 2014 MCA-I Hosts Leadership Roundtable

On Wednesday, May21 the LA/OC Chapter of MCA-i is hosting a roundtable discussion of membership outreach and service for all the non-profit media organizations in OC. We've invited over a dozen organizations to participate.  The idea is to bring together the leadership to solve a common problem: membership outreach and involvement. With a page taken from MCAI's MediaProCamp, the format is designed to share common experiences, best practices and find solutions to serve our respective members and the community at large. The evening will be moderated by MCA-i president Walter Davis and will be recorded for the organizations to  use at a later date. Space is limited so it's not open to the public but anyone representing a non-profit media organization is welcome to join.  Location: Digital Media Center at 1300 S. Bristol St in Santa Ana, beginning at 6:30 PM.

Meeting Review: Jan 15th 2014

It was a full house at the OC Sound Stage for the LA/OC Chapter's "Audio! Audio! Audio!" presentation at the first meeting of 2014. As often happens, many people who did not RSVP via the chapter's meetup site showed up, so food was in short supply…but participation was not. The seats were filled with media pros from every area--audio, video, performers, etc.

After short opening comments from the three experts on the panel (on professional audio pet peeves,) MC John Coleman of Twin Oaks Communications, made it clear that the experience and wisdom of the audience was to be part of the process. As a result, the great commentary from panelists, Tim Keenan, Chief Engineer at Creative Media Recording; Rick Sherman of Sherman Sound Suite; and Brian Page of Vocal Images, was reinforced and expanded upon by real-life stories from the audience. What'd ya say? I said, AUDIO is at least half of your success if you're doing a video …and a whole lot more if you're not working with pictures. This month MCAI is joined by our friends at PVN to help you get the best audio production with the least problems no matter what medium you're working in. Our panel consists of 3 experts that cover the spectrum of sound: top recording engineer, Tim Keenan of Creative Media Recording in Cypress; Theatrical Sound Designer Brian Page who also is a VO artist; and Audio Post Production master, as well as musician and composer, Rick Sherman of Sherman Sound Suite . Between them we'll cover everything from mics to mixing, recording to ADR and editing to EQ. As usual, you can expect your fellow pros to come up with important questions and contribute with their collective wisdom. Sharing tips and best practices is why we get together.

Our good friends at PVN (the professional Videographers Network) have invited MCA-i to join them to celebrate the Holiday Season! They're opening the doors for you and all our fellow Media Pros next Thursday, December 19th at Ricardo's Don Jose Restaurant in Tustin starting at 7:00 PM.

We've partied with these folks many times and they're a great crew! And get this: they're only asking attendees to kick in $10. Apparently it's been a good year for videographers because they're going to cover the rest of the cost for food and refreshments. I mean, really ten bucks? That's nothing. And the PVN crowd loves their food so you can bet Don Jose will be putting out quite a spread! Of course, beer and wine will be available at a cash bar (They know us so well!)

And Oh. yeah, bring a wrapped gift (value about $15) for the gift exchange. They do this every year and it's a lotta fun--you know where you pick a wrapped gift, open it and the next person gets the option to steal it away or pick a still-wrapped gift? Don't want to participate? Then don''t bring a gift!

If you're going (why wouldn't you?) RSVP to Petr Hasa so they can plan for food. (Believe me those videographers eat a lot! so you don't want to just show up and have them short on food!) I asked about entertainment and they said that to guarantee a wild time, past PVN President John Lister will be doing his Dance of the Seven Veils after dinner. We'll see you there!

BOY! DID WE GET IT WRONG! Our apologies, but we have to correct our last announcement: our friends at The South Coast Media Center including OC Sound Stage, and media companies Live Linkups, Sherman Sound Suite, Vision Star Media and E-Marcom are only offering a STUDIO AND FACILITIIES TOUR this Wednesday evening, December 11th!




Now, that doesn't mean they won't show you a good time if you stop by to tour the studio and facilities--just don't expect ta party! If you're not familiar with South Coast Media Center and the companies housed therein you owe it to yourself to take the tour.
